This paper summarises discussions on the?life skill? movement from a meeting of the UK working group on HIV/AIDS and Education, held May 2004 in London. It was based on discussion evoked by presentations from Peter Aggleton, David Clarke and Janet Bujra.
This paper introduces the life skills movement, discusses progress in implementing life skills in schools, and then addresses why there has been a lack of implementation in the schools. Key obstacles to implementation discussed are:
ú A lack of focus on pedagogy
ú The reality of the classroom
ú Assumptions about youth and ?youthfulness?
ú Assumptions of rationality and human agency.
The implications of these issues on life skills education are discussed and recommendations are made for future action.
The paper concludes on a note of caution that successful implementation of life skills approaches requires far more effort than has currently been provided.
