This 2004 Unicef report argues that education, particularly for girls, is fundamental
to reversing the spread of HIV/AIDS.
Chapter one gives an overview of the HIV/AIDS epidemic and highlights the situation among youth and children. International commitments are discussed and it is argued that educators have an opportunity and responsibility to provide children and young people with a safe space to understand and cope in a world of HIV/AIDS.
Chapter two addresses the role of gender disparities in placing women at greater risk of contracting HIV and causing them to bear the greater burden of disease. Gender based violence in schools is discussed and it is argued that education must work to transform gender relationships.
Chapter three explores in more detail the power of girls? education and the importance of comprehensive HIV/AIDS education in the schools.
Chapter 4 presents a call to action, presenting three strategic priorities to support schools in playing an optimal role in protecting girls
